Muriwai, Bethells, Sand Dunes, Lake Wainamu

We decided to take a weekend trip to Muriwai! We started out walking the beach and along the sandstone cliffs. We found some crazy blue jellyfish that had washed up all along the beach and a little eel!

The highlight of the day was definitely the gannet colony. They dive into the water at speeds of around 145 kph to catch fish! We got to see them up close during breeding season which was so cool.

Then we walked over to Maori bay to explore a sea cave and more of the beach. We found all kinds of creepy anemones!

Then we revisited Bethells and O'Neills beaches for lunch. The parking lot was completely full and everyone had brought their dogs so we got to meet some nice puppies along the way.

On the way out, we decided to walk to Lake Wainamu. The lake itself was not very impressive but the sand dunes along the route definitely were! The best part were the many stream crossings along the trail.
