 HEY THERE!

My name is Jocelyn Johnson. I grew up in Bellingham, Washington, but for the last two years, I have been pursuing a civil engineering degree at Colorado School of Mines. This fall, I will be studying abroad at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. While in New Zealand, I will continue my engineering coursework, and also fulfill practicum requirements for my minor in public affairs through the McBride Honors program.

In addition to my school work, I hope to meet amazing people, explore the outdoors, learn to be more independent, but most importantly, gain new perspectives.

I have never left North America, so I am a little scared to leave home and meet new people, but I know this adventure will be rewarding and life-changing if I push past my comfort zone and tackle my fears. I am not very experienced at traveling alone, so I hope this journey will allow me to get to know myself better as well as New Zealand's culture.

Though I will be traveling to an entirely different country, I have heard that New Zealand is similar to the US in many ways so it will be interesting to see how the two countries compare and how they differ. I am especially looking forward to learning about Maori culture.

Admittedly, the main reason why I chose to study abroad in New Zealand was its natural beauty, so I hope to spend as much time as possible exploring the outdoors and discovering new landscapes.

I am excited and nervous and so grateful to get the opportunity to  go to New Zealand and I can't wait to share my experiences with all of you! Stay tuned for updates and pictures!

PRE-TRIP EXPECTATIONS!
