First stop of the day was Shag Point to see a fur seal colony. We were the only ones there that morning and it was very cool to scramble up and down the rocks to get up close to the seals (but not too close).
Next up was Moeraki Boulders. These
Oamaru was a super interesting town. Thanks to a little 10 minute video they play at the visitor center, we learned why an entire section of the town is full of Victorian architecture. In the 1860's, the economy was booming and the rock used in the buildings was readily available nearby. However, when the economy took a turn for the worst, growth stopped and many people moved away. The architecture was frozen in time and today it is home to art galleries, cute book shops and steampunk themed fashion stores.
We took a nice nap in the car, ate some pasta, then went to Bushy Beach for a chance to see yellow eyed penguins. Yellow eyed penguins are one of the more elusive species of penguin that lives in NZ and the beach was closed to the public at 3pm to protect their nesting sites. This meant we could only see the beach from a viewing platform. We forgot to buy binoculars and the penguins come out at night, so it was tough to determine whether we saw a yellow eyed penguin or a seagull but the sunset was beautiful anyway!
